Some UK charities could be in line for financial assistance after the government announced a £40 million bailout for organisations affected by the economic downturn.
Liam Byrne, the cabinet secretary, said many third sector organisations and social enterprises are facing tough challenges in the present financial climate.
"We're launching a package of help with tens of millions extra for charities providing employment advice, mental health and family support services in the most deprived areas of England and Wales, plus millions extra to help those out of work start volunteering," he commented.
A cautious welcome to the announcement was given by Stephen Bubb, the chief executive of the Association of Chief Executive Officers of Voluntary Organisations, who described the move as "a start".
It was recently reported by Third Sector magazine that animal welfare charities have been among the hardest hit by the downturn, as increasing numbers of people find are finding they cannot afford to look after domestic animals any longer.
