Over half of charities 'affected by downturn'

More than half (52 per cent) of UK charities have said their finances have been affected by the economic downturn, according to the results of a new survey.

The findings are part of the Charity Commission's latest economic poll, which also found that 64 per cent of charities with an annual income in excess of £1 million are worried about the sustainability of their work.

A small number said they have considered collaborating with other organisations, while the same percentage of respondents have thought about merging.

Dame Suzi Leather, chair of the commission, claimed the number of charities implementing measures to mitigate risks associated with the recession has increased.

She commented: "Some charities still face that double whammy of a drop in income as well as an increased demand for services."

The Charity Commission aims to ensure legal compliance and enhance the accountability of UK charities.
