Charity campaign promotes legacy giving

Charities

31st March 2009

A new campaign has been launched to encourage people to leave more money to charities in their wills.

Remember a Charity has been set up by a group of more than 140 organisations in the UK and includes a series of TV adverts to promote the leaving of legacy gifts.

In the last quarter of 2008, legacy giving dropped by around £66 million as a result of the economic downturn and the ailing housing market, the group said.

It is expected that the donations will fall by another £200 million this year again.

Stephen George, chairman of the campaign, said that many people do not realise they can leave money to good causes when they die.

"The truth is that after looking after family and friends first, a small share of whatever is left can make a real difference to charities and the invaluable work they do," he commented.

Recently, it was reported that a ban on charity comparisons in adverts could be lifted.
