Fall in charity jobs sparks fears

Charities

5th May 2009

Concerns have been raised about staffing at UK charities following new figures which showed a fall in the number of people working for such organisations last year.

Research by the Office for National Statistics found that the total workforce of charities and voluntary organisations fell by 8,000 in the last three months of the year.

This compares to the all-time high of 724,000 seen in the third quarter of the year.

Jenny Clark, research manager at the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO), told Third Sector: "Clearly, people are losing their jobs in the sector and we should not be complacent.

"At the same time, however, there is also a danger of being alarmist."

Recently, the NCVO revealed that the economic downturn is forcing many charity leaders to suspend the recruitment of new staff.

Research by the organisation also found that an overwhelming majority (88 per cent) of those questioned in the sector think economic conditions will have a negative effect on charities over the next year.
