Government unveils social investment funding

Charities

16th September 2009

Britain's minister for the third sector has announced that a total of £5 million is being pledged for social investment.

Angela Smith also launched new guides on the subject and unveiled the first Social Investment Almanack for Britain - Good Deals 2009 - which details opportunities in the field.

She was speaking at the Social Investment Conference and explained that "there are opportunities to be seized" in the sector, with a growing number of people "seeking out ethical products and services".

"I am keen that we develop ways to harness the power of the market and unlock mainstream capital," Ms Smith added.

The £5 million will form part of the Bridges Social Entrepreneurs Fund, which will also include investment from foundations, institutes and individuals in order to provide social enterprises with risk capital to enable them to develop.

Meanwhile, Judy Ledger, Baby Lifeline's founder and chief executive, has warned that red tape can pose problems for charities in the UK and has advocated updating legislation that is out of date.
