Charitable giving in the UK has dropped by an estimated £1.3 billion (11 per cent) to £9.9 billion, a new report has revealed.

Figures from the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF) and the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO) suggested that the median donated per person per month was £10 during 2008-09, a £1 fall over the previous 12 months.

A survey of more than 3,300 adults discovered that the number giving money to charity each month dipped by two per cent to 54 per cent last year, with the most popular causes including medical research, hospitals and hospices and children and young people.

CAF chief executive John Low stated: "It's a sign of what a generous nation we are that people are continuing to support their favourite charities and understandable that they have less money to give."

The NCVO and CAF have called on people to tick the Gift Aid box when they are making donations to the 170,000 charities in the UK, as an estimated £750 million currently goes unclaimed.

Gift Aid is relief provided for money received by UK charities from those paying income or capital gains tax.
