Cuba trips to require medical insurance

Personal insurance

9th March 2010

Any holidaymakers heading to Cuba will be required to have medical insurance cover in place before entering the country.

The new legislation comes into force on May 1st 2010 and have been agreed by the nation's Executive Committee of the Council of Ministers.

Commenting on the news, Captivating Cuba managing director Steve Diederich said: "As Cuba's healthcare system is excellent and world-renowned, it's not surprising that the government wants to cover its costs in this area."

He added that the country has "always been relaxed and helpful" about the issues of visitors' healthcare, a situation he hopes continues after the change.

Those planning a trip to the Caribbean island later this year should therefore make sure they have a UK insurance policy in place that complies with the law.

Visitor numbers to Cuba are expected to climb during 2010, according to the Caribbean Tourism Organization, with the country becoming popular in recent years with British travellers.
