A record level of interest has been seen in the social care profession, according to new government figures.

Data published by the Department of Health show that positions in the field are becoming more popular and a poll found more than one in three adults would consider changing career to work in social care.

According to the government, more than 28,000 people have registered with a website run by the United Kingdom Homecare Association to match employers with jobseekers, creating a large pool of potential staff.

Particularly high levels of interest were seen in younger age groups, possibly in response to a national campaign that included print and television advertising in a bid to boost recruitment.

Care services minister Phil Hope described it as "brilliant news" for the industry and he pointed to the potential for social care positions to "make a real difference to someone else's life".

Operators of care homes seeking a UK insurance policy may be interest to learn that a recent report in the Daily Mail claimed UK residents face a "postcode lottery" when it comes to local authority funding for care, with broad variations across the country.
